The northern Italian region of the Veneto is a place filled with history, and the products it creates reflect the memory of a people accustomed to taking a long view of time. In this ancient province, what seem to be mundane things tend to reflect the pageantry of the ages. Our White Scallop Large Footed Bowl is a sterling example. This piece is made of terra marrone, a sculptor’s clay that has been available only since the Renaissance, when intensive cultivation in the region lowered the level of the Brenta River and made this marvelous substance suddenly accessible on its banks. The design reflects both a modern eye for the waves of the Adriatic Sea and, in the bowl’s sculpted feet, the atavistic memory of Etruscan designs introduced by a long-gone people who once exacted tribute from the peoples of the Lagoon. Your Large Footed Bowl is part of history yet entirely your own; because it’s hand-cast, it’s unlike any other one ever made.
