Product Description

Napoleon in 1806 replaced the fleur-de-lis with the bee as the national French emblem, in the belief that the bee was the ancient symbol of Merovingian kings. However, many hold that the Merovingian bee wasn’t a bee, but a grasshopper – Napoleon’s advisers apparently got their insects wrong. But Napoleon’s word was law, so the bee replaced the fleur-de-lis and remains a central motif in French and especially Provençal weaving to this day.
